You’re a bridegroom of blood to me It’s a fine mess now can’t you see Just how everything changed when you took hold of me You’re a blood-stained groom to me I saw how you came along Showing who’s boss, and who’s wrong Playin’ the hero like I needed you Thinkin’ I’d sing you a song Water to wash and to slake Giving out bread for my sake Thru all the wastelands you had what I’d need And promise of wine while I wait Cut off my heart from the world Cut up the world of this girl Taking the blood you knew I’d never give To place in my hands such a pearl

Crowded here along inside this room Trapped within so long it’s like my tomb Choices that I’ve made, Or some old family way becomes my doom Far off in the distance I can hear People from afar now drawing near Fire in the sky, Stories passing by leave us in fear Now a scarlet cord swings in this dead, dry heat A promise that was made I’m trusting still that you will see Shame is on display and my whole world despises me What is there now left for me to do? But sit beneath this scarlet cord Wait for you and believe most of life is waiting 'round to die, sitting, wondering if it's worth a try I would soldier on, play at being strong, not asking why hope is something I'd been taught to fear never give a word, nor lend an ear then they came around, telling what they'd found and that you're near Now a scarlet cord swings in this dead, dry heat A promise that was made I’m trusting still that you will see Shame is on display and my whole world despises me What is there now left for me to do? But sit beneath this scarlet cord Wait for you and believe And Now I see in time A morning star will rise So I can bear this long long night Still a scarlet cord swings in this dead, dry heat A promise that was made I’m trusting still that you will see Shame is on display and my whole world despises me What is there now left for me to do? But sit beneath this scarlet cord Wait for you and believe

Get Up, Get up he screams, and I’ve no strength to wonder why Kick me while I’m down and claim it’s me that makes him cry And after all that laughter, such a clever charming guy, What would you say? What would you say if I crawled to your door? Left my blood smeared all across your wall? If I reached the threshold and I called? What would you say? Daddy shrugs and claims I should answer for my ways Daddy wonders who is right and who might who betray So here I walk into the dark with fools who love decay Well what would you say? What would you say if I crawled to your door? Left my blood smeared all across your wall? If I reached the threshold and I called? What would you say? What would you say if I crawled to your door? Left my blood smeared all across your wall? If I reached the threshold and I called? What would you say? Listen to the crowd sing out and clamour for a sign Shout for blood and long to see the innocent maligned Now no one’s left but nails, thorns, and the taste of sour wine What did you say? What should I say? What should I say when I crawl to your door? See your precious blood spilled on the floor? Do I believe this settles all the scores? What do you say? What do you say when I crawl to your door? Leave my blood smeared all across your wall? If I reach the threshold and I called? What would you say? What would you say?

Sunlight, Blue Skies, You know that it’s all right Chosen, for this time, look how that thing shines So reach out reach out, Come on keep it steady Reach out reach out you know my heart is ready Reach out reach out, I just might touch the glory What’ve I done, what’ve I done? what’ve I done? What’ve I done what’ve I done, What’ve I done? What’ve I done? I Saw a moment my life stuck in time I saw the lightning and thunder of my life So reach out reach out, Come on keep it steady Reach out reach out you know my heart is ready Reach out reach out, I just might touch the glory What’ve I done, what’ve I done? what’ve I done? What’ve I done what’ve I done, What’ve I done? What’ve I done? And still you bless them, even while they cry still You search then even when they hide You are good, good good, in your rebuke You are good, good, even when we’re fools So reach out reach out, Come on keep it steady Reach out reach out you know my heart is ready Reach out reach out, I just might touch the glory What’ve I done, what’ve I done? what’ve I done? What’ve I done what’ve I done, What’ve I done? What’ve I done?

Here comes that old man again and all of my friends wink and roll their eyes he's got a hard word to say to trust in his way and look to the sky So I pour out, while I cry All my life, poured out and dry And yet I still listen and try And I pour What have I got but today A kid and no way To keep our name alive What chance does he have to live To grow and to give, hope and to thrive So I pour out, while I cry All my life, poured out and dry And yet I still listen and try And I pour Did you send all this so I’d cry even more? I search the sky for some way you’re keeping score One drop of goodness, One Drop of rain But only daily bread you send me again So I pour out, while I cry All my life, poured out and dry And yet I still listen and try And I pour

Wave My hand, yeah they all run after that Drop out my name, yeah, and put on my best hat Fill up my cup and load my plate with all the fat But I’m nowhere near the top cat, no where near... Yeah I’m In (but I’m out) But I’m in (and I’m out) Am I in (while I’m out)? Yeah I’m out, but I’m in, but I’m in I got a hundred to command well have you heard But there’s no way that I turn death with just a word Oh so much useless power, yeah ain’t that absurd But here it’s my heart that’s been cured, here’s my heart…. Yeah I’m In (but I’m out) But I’m in (and I’m out) Am I in (while I’m out)? Yeah I’m out, but I’m in, but I’m in How much power, How much lack can I bring? This broken life under a sword on a string What hope could I get in this world where I cling What sort of privileged is left for me here? When all those out in front will all take up the rear And all the while I sit where angels long to peer What’s left now that I fear? What should I fear? Yeah I’m In (but I’m out) But I’m in (and I’m out) Am I in (while I’m out)? Yeah I’m out, but I’m in, but I’m in

Standing in the back again, But I still see it all Push and shove of others, With you there still and small I remember a crowd of thousands Across the greening hills They turned and loved the bloodstains when tired of the thrills How My fears catch my out again and I’m caught running naked from the scene I’m a smoldering wick again wondering if you’ll ever see Will I hide here forever then, or will you come and cover me, cover me? Watching waiting willing, but they turn and walk away I know it’s me that shattered, are they only preaching grace? Then My fears catch my out again and I’m caught running naked from the scene I’m a smoldering wick again wondering if you’ll ever see Will I hide here forever then, or will you come and cover me, cover me? And all of those times I’d sit and smile With the crowd that I never did fit in All the great minds, and all the uphill climbs And the long lonely letters with my sin Still my fears catch my out again and I’m caught running naked from the scene I’m a smoldering wick again wondering if you’ll ever see Will I hide here forever then, or will you come and cover me, cover me?

Meet me in the Garden Words that haunt me where I lay Greeting and a kiss seen How easy we can betray Swords they flash, like diamonds Lust for power just to slay How it all entraps, defiles Much like how my life it lays But you speak and I fall to the earth You reach and I try to hide my face You touch and I wonder how you heal And then I hear you calling out my name Johnny he said nothing Johnny turned and ran away You just stood there watching A quiet rock above the fray Then you speak and I fall to the earth You reach and I try to hide my face You touch and I wonder how you heal And then I hear you calling out my name Blood and water pour Sky and curtain torn What I’ve seen, what you stepped between Leaves me asking, what’s it for? Still you speak and I fall to the earth Still You reach and I try to hide my face Still You touch and I wonder how you heal And Still I hear you calling out my name…

Sunshine and salt on my face Windswept wave, and so much at stake All eyes follow my wake All question why I’m running this race Only a letter to read, all of those questions to me All of the ways I could stumble and Fall on my knees And the wonder of it all you put your word into the hands of this girl And I wander thru the seas and wonder how all this history unfurls And with every passing mile you know the weight of the world Long times I would see fire Lost child and lovers who die Your word came and gave light Your face shines in the night Only a letter to read, all of those questions to me All of the ways I could stumble and Fall on my knees And the wonder of it all you put your word into the hands of this girl And I wander thru the seas and wonder how all this history unfurls And with every passing mile you know the weight of the world Pillars of fire weave thru all of my dreams Walking alone and yet you’re leading me How then should I speak, feeling so weak? And the wonder of it all you put your word into the hands of this girl And I wander thru the seas and wonder how all this history unfurls And with every passing mile you know the weight of the world

about

Several things came together in 2020 that spurred me to start thinking about a different kind of project. I follow Resound Worship, a writing community that posts a monthly songwriting challenge, and one month it was “write a song on a lesser-known bible character." This got me thinking about all the characters in scripture that might only get a verse or two: who were they, what were their stories, what was their relationship with God like? We can only guess, based on clues in scripture, and what we know about history. Everything else is best-guess-work and imagination. How did they pray? What were their fears, hopes, and challenges? How did they view Jesus, either as a dim promise in the future or looking back on his life, death and resurrection? So the concept for this record came together.

At the same time, the things I’d been listening to (and the fact that we still couldn’t get people together) challenged me to go learn more production techniques, and wrestle with how the production can change the way I write. So even with a small part of a verse or chorus, I’d record a bit, add different rhythms and instruments, and play with sounds and noises to see what else that would inspire.

So here we are with this release – imagining different people and the world they are in, playing with new toys, and learning all kinds of stuff.

I’m hopeful it might point people to scripture and read it in a fresh way, perhaps even wrestling through some of the more odd and difficult passages in light of the whole Gospel story and work of God.

Thanks to Resound Worship and the 12SC community for the original inspiration and idea, and continuing to be such an amazing group of people! Thanks especially to the October ‘21 retreat crowd and the feedback on a couple of the songs.
To Sarah: Thank you for the Artwork, and the occasional kick in the backside.
To Will: Thank you for the quiet confidence and encouragement to keep going.
To Henry: Thank you for pushing my writing, and for the minor chords.
To Vicki: Thanks for putting up with me while you have to listen over (and over and over) again to these songs as they developed…
